How to Get the Best Gas Mileage out of Your Tires and Replace them Less Often - Helpful Car Maintenance Tips

How to Get the Best Gas Mileage out of Your Tires and Replace them Less Often

With gas prices at an all time high, most Americans are scrambling to car pool, drive less, take public transportation or are just resorting to selling their cars.

Of course, many consumers are turning, more and more to hybrid cars as a solution to offset the higher prices at the pumps. And for those of us who want to keep our environment clean and stay in shape at the same time, bicycling riding is making a strong come back in many US cities.

Did you know that for every 3 pounds that your tires are below their recommended pressure, your fuel economy drops 1 percent?

Did you know that keeping your tires under inflated, shortens their life span?

This is called, in the science of the tire industry, “rolling resistance”.  It is the measure of how easily a tire rolls down the road, while minimizing energy wasted as heat. If you have flabby tires, they have a higher rolling resistance. This in turn, wastes more car fuel.

Some tire manufacturers even sell tires designed to minimize rolling resistance.

So, if you want to save cash and replace your tires less often, keep your vehicle’s tires inflated to their proper pressure. You will, not only increase your car’s fuel economy, but also increase the life of your tires.

Happy Motoring…
